More Cellphones than Citizens
For the first time in history, the number of wireless subscriber connections (327.6 million) has surpassed the population (315.5 million) in the United States and its territories! CTIA – The Wireless Association conducted the survey in the first half of 2011. Results showed not only that the wireless penetration rate in the U.S. is 103.9% but also showed a 111% increase in wireless data traffic.
According to CTIA, wireless network data traffic through the first six months of 2011 was more than double the amount used in the same time period last year. In addition, nearly 96 million smartphones and PDAs were in use, a 57% increase. There were an astounding 278.3 million data-capable devices being used in the U.S. at the end of June.
The survey also revealed that Americans used a total of 1.15 trillion minutes on wireless networks, an increase of 1% over the prior year. In addition, 1.14 trillion (yes, trillion!) text messages were sent in the first six months of 2011. This is an increase of 16% from the 982.9 billion SMS messages sent in the prior year.
