Emergency Management Among 50 Best Careers of 2011
According to U.S. News & World Report, Emergency Management Specialist is one of the 50 Best Careers of 2011.
In the category of Social Service Jobs, Emergency Management Specialist was named along with Firefighter, Urban Planner and several others. The National Emergency Management Association describes Emergency Management as the discipline of dealing with and avoiding risks, particularly those that have deleterious or catastrophic consequences for communities, regions, or entire countries, with a focus on mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the field of Emergency Management to grow by 22 percent, between 2008 and 2018. The Bureau also reports that the highest paid specialists were in the states of California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Most jobs in this field are in the public sector such as the military, law enforcement, and state and local governments, but both private sector and nonprofit employers are beginning to employ emergency management specialists including hospitals, colleges and universities, and community relief organizations.
